Planning Your Visit
MAMA's exhibition schedule is planned well in advance. For a synopsis of upcoming exhibitions, please contact us and we will forward you the most up to date schedule. Education Kits have been prepared for a number of exhibitions. A list of all available Education Kits is on our Resources page.
Schools are welcome to undertake a free self-guided tour, or seek a more tailored experience with a guided tour or private studio session. Please let us know that your group is coming, even if you will be guiding your group yourself. This ensures that we don't have multiple groups at once, and makes for a more relaxed visit for everyone.
A selection of video artworks are also available to view during your school visit. Contact us for a list of available video works from the collection, or see the list of works from Kaldor Public Arts Projects’ MOVE: Video Art in Schools available at MAMA.
Your point of contact at MAMA is Hannah Mitchell, Education Officer. Please contact Hannah on (02) 6043 5807 or via email to book your visit and discuss any specific needs or interests.
What to Bring
Students will be able to leave their bags in a secure room. It is advisable that students have a sketchbook to respond to the artwork. Food and drinks will not be able to be consumed in the museum, but there are lovely shady areas outside to eat and drink.
Go over the Museum Manners with your students:
WE DO: Consider the people around us who are visiting the museum, take photographs (without flash)
WE DON'T: Touch the art, run around, or eat and drink in the museum.
MAMA can help you plan a meaningful experience for your students that suits your school's budget.
Tour options when visiting MAMA:
- Staff welcome followed by self-guided tour, FREE.
- Guided tours with a staff member, $2 per student
- Guided tour + tailored studio session, $5 per student
- VCE Studio Arts tour with staff member, $5 per student
Staff will welcome you to MAMA and orient your group to the building and its facilities, the layout of the gallery spaces and the current exhibitions. This will take about 20 minutes. From there, educators may lead their students through the building to the exhibitions of interest. Students may bring notebooks or sketchbooks into the spaces, but not wet art materials.
Guided School Tours
School groups may wish to have an extended tour of 30 minutes or more with a MAMA staff member, at a cost of $2 per student. Our staff will discuss your specific needs and interests with you to help tailor the tour, and suggest activities.
Enjoy a guided tour through the MAMA collection and exhibitions, followed by a responsive art making session in the studio.
This session can be tailored to the skills and abilities of students of all ages, from preschool to tertiary students. Lead educators can choose the focus of their class session from the following options:
