Event Name National Photography Prize 2020
Start Date 21 Feb 2020
End Date 14 Jun 2020
Duration 115 days

Every two years the National Photography Prize offers an opportunity to consider the vital role of photography in contemporary art in Australia. In 2020, the National Photography Prize finalists’ exhibition presents a selection of the most innovative and thoughtful photo-based practices from across the country. The exhibition gives audiences the ability to consider each of the finalists’ work in depth, with a number of key recent works by each finalist resulting in an exhibition that has much room for reflection on the current state of photography and image based work in Australia.

Generously supported by the MAMA Art Foundation, the National Photography Prize offers a $30,000 acquisitive first prize, the $5000 John and Margaret Baker Fellowship for an emerging practitioner, and further supports a number of artists through focused acquisitions.

The National Photography Prize was inaugurated in 1983, and has largely been held biennially. It is Australia’s longest running acquisitive photographic award. The 2020 iteration represents its 15th presentation.
