Beginner Oil Painting

Learn how to paint with oils under the guidance of experienced artist and tutor Kate Maclurcan. In this 6 week course you will learn the foundation skills needed to paint confidently with oil paints by completing a selection of easy to achieve exercise in a supportive environment.

What you will learn

  • Identify materials specific to oil painting and their uses
  • Colour theory and how to create your own colour palette
  • How to utilize underpainting
  • How to paint using the alla prima method (wet on wet)
  • High Key and Low Key
  • How to evaluate your work
  • Tips on framing and preservation

In the final week you will be able to create a work of your choice using your newly learned skills with the support of your tutor.

All materials are provided. Aprons are available though, please wear clothes appropriate for painting and closed-toe shoes.

Meet the Tutor: Kate Maclurcan


Kate Maclurcan is an experienced artist and tutor specialising in oil painting. She recently relocated to the region from Wollongong. Kate is inspired by the museum’s strong history of creative community engagement and she believes in the power of art to foster lifelong creativity, connection, and social wellbeing.
