Oil Painting for Beginners

Learn how to work with oil paints under the guidance of experienced artist and tutor Kate Maclurcan. In this 6 week course you will learn the foundation skills needed to paint confidently with oil paints by completing a selection of easy to achieve exercise in a supportive environment.

What you will learn

  • Identify materials specific to oil painting and their uses
  • Colour theory and how to create your own colour palette
  • How to utilize underpainting
  • How to paint using the alla prima method (wet on wet)
  • High Key and Low Key
  • How to evaluate your work
  • Tips on framing and preservation
  • In the final week you will be able to create a work of your choice using your newly learned skills with the support of your tutor.

Recommended Materials Kit

Paint:

  • 40ml Langridge oil Quinacridone crimson or cool red of choice
  • 40ml Langridge oil Naphthol red or warm red of choice
  • 40ml Langridge oil Ultramarine blue or cool blue of choice
  • 40ml Langridge oil Phthalo blue (red shade) or warm blue of choice
  • 110ml Langridge oil Yellow ochre or warm yellow of choice
  • 110ml Langridge oil Arylide lemon yellow or cool yellow of choice
  • 110ml Langridge oil raw umber or neutral brown of choice
  • 150ml Art Spectrum oil titanium white or titanium white of choice

Mediums:

  • Gamblin solvent free gel (non toxic)
  • Langridge low toxic solvent 1ltr
  • Brush and hand cleaner suitable for oil paint cleanup


Surface:

  • Pre Primed Canvas roll with fine surface such as Art Spectrum mini roll 8oz cotton Canvas 18" x 5m or pre primed canvas of choice.


Brushes:

  • Brushes Size 2, bristle brush Filbert
  • Brushes Size 4, bristle brush Filbert
  • Brushes Size 6, bristle brush Filbert
  • Brushes Size 8, bristle brush Filbert
  • Brushes Size 10, bristle brush Filbert
  • Brush roll or case


Additional items:

  • Painter's/masking tape approximate 1 inch wide
  • 2 clean jam jars with lids
  • Rags - old shirts or cotton bedding work well

Aprons are available though, please wear clothes appropriate for painting and closed-toe shoes.

Kate Maclurcan is an experienced artist and tutor specialising in oil painting. She recently relocated to the region from Wollongong. Kate is inspired by the museum’s strong history of creative community engagement and she believes in the power of art to foster lifelong creativity, connection, and social wellbeing.
