The much anticipated opening of the new $10.5M Murray Art Museum Albury has gone off with a bang, with hot pink glitter fired out of two confetti cannons as the Federal Member for Farrer, Sussan Ley, opened MAMA's doors.
"Guided by the Advisory Committee, Arts Albury and the MAMA Foundation the response to the city's call for support has been unprecedented. An incredible $1.3M has so far been raised through philanthropic contributions," he said.
He was also delighted by today's announcement by Minister Ley of a further $300K Australian Government donation to MAMA in recognition of the contribution of the Albury Wodonga Corporation to the social, cultural and economic development of Albury Wodonga.
Around 300 invited guests were among the first through the doors of the landmark new building.
AlburyCity Mayor Henk van de Ven described the opening as a truly special day – one about re-birth, transition and Albury's maturity as it enters a new era and place in the cultural landscape of Australia.
Cr van de Ven paid tribute to the architects and builders for respecting the history and heritage of the former Town Hall and Burrows House and transitioning from the 'magnificent old to the vibrant new'.
"MAMA has been embraced and is already loved by so many people far and wide, and this is only going to grow as more and more people come to Albury just to visit MAMA."
"The economic return and employment opportunities for our business community cannot be understated. We expect more than 80,000 visitors to come to MAMA each year, 30,000 of those unique visits – they will visit Albury to come to MAMA."
