Born out of a tour of outback far north Queensland in 1959, this collection of photographs by Sidney Nolan depicted the horror of the 1950's drought.

Commissioned by the Brisbane Courier Mail, the photographs were never published due to their confronting content.

Ahead of their time, the photographs captured a drought experience that became more commonplace in half century that followed these photographs. Importantly, they speak to the fears of rural Australia as being forced to adapt to ever drier, ever hotter, ever more precarious agricultural conditions.
