In the new exhibition Dainas, multi-disciplinary artist Inga Hanover invites audiences to revel in the celebrations of Ķekatas, the Latvian winter solstice festival. Incorporating installation, textile sculpture, and video the exhibition shares a rich visual language shaped by ritual, folklore, and the occult.
The exhibition title refers to a traditional Latvian form of poetry or music. Dainas are short-form poetic texts intended to guide ritual and festival, as well as the practices of daily life.
About the artist
Inga Hanover’s practice is grounded in her Latvian cultural heritage and her inherent desire to understand and preserve its ritual and folklore. Her installation, textile, and video works explore history, storytelling, and memory, woven together by an exploration of the meaning of ‘home’.
Based in Beechworth, Hanover has held several solo exhibitions, most recently at the Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery, and Wagga Wagga Art Gallery. She has previously exhibited at MAMA in a three-person exhibition in 2016.
